cleaning grillNow that spring is (officially!) here, our thoughts turn to all those little projects we do every year to keep our North Carolina home running the way it should. One of the most important things you can do this time of year is to check in on your propane appliances.
Here are seven tasks you can perform for your propane-powered equipment in the warming weeks to come.

  • Your outdoor propane grill – According to the National Fire Prevention Agency, nearly one-quarter of all grill fires that occur in the U.S. are caused by improper grill cleaning. Before you start your spring grilling, invest some time in a deep grill cleaning. You should also check your grill for leaks and refill or order exchange propane cylinders if you need to. Still using a charcoal grill? Upgrade to a Broilmaster propane grill – you’ll never look back!
  • Your propane range – If your propane cooking range has a self-cleaning feature, spring is a great time to use it. You can also try using baking soda and vinegar.
  • Your propane clothes dryer – Clean your propane clothes dryer’s exhaust fan using a brush made for this purpose (you can get them at your local hardware store). Vent blockage can significantly reduce the flow of air to the dryer, which will cause higher bills and create a potential fire hazard.
  • Your propane leak and CO detectors – Check batteries and test all the propane leak and carbon monoxide detector units in your home.
  • Your propane backup generator – Be prepared for spring storms by filling your propane backup generator. Be sure to clear it of any debris that may have gathered in the fall and winter, too.
  • Your propane tank – Clear the space around your outdoor propane tank, paying special attention to anything that can burn (dry grass, leaves, wood, etc.). Try to keep a 10-foot perimeter around your propane tank debris-free.
  • Your propane water heater – It’s a good idea to flush your propane water heater at least once a year to remove excess sediment from the storage tank; over time, sediment will reduce efficiency and shorten the life of your equipment. Don’t want to deal with flushing your water heater? Switch to a high efficiency propane tankless heater!
