Enjoy Better Comfort & Energy Efficiency With These Tips

propane efficiency tips north carolinaAre you enjoying the early spring weather? So are we!
And as it starts to warm up even further, it’s important to remember that now is the perfect time to take care of those annual spring-cleaning tasks. Not only can they help your home become more attractive but make it more energy-efficient and comfortable as well.
We’ve put together some tips to help you get this done.

Tune Up Your HVAC System

This is the perfect time to get your home’s heating and cooling system tuned up.
Commonly throughout April and May, there isn’t as much demand for heating system repairs, and most people aren’t thinking about A/C maintenance just yet. But, by scheduling your HVAC tune-up now, you will be able to get an appointment at a time that’s most convenient for you—and your system will be ready to go for that first cold snap in the fall.

Change Your Air Filters

Dust kicked up from spring cleaning, amongst pollen and other debris in the air can speed up how fast it takes to clog your HVAC system’s air filter. A clogged filter reduces your HVAC system’s inefficiency and damage parts in your system, leading to breakdowns and expensive repair bills.
Add a reminder to your calendar to check your air filter at least once a month and change as needed. And make sure you have several extra air filters on hand so you can change them as needed without having to make a trip to the home improvement store.

Schedule Ductwork Cleaning

If your home’s ductwork has not been cleaned in the last three to five years, it needs to be cleaned this year. Dirty ductwork not only reduces your heating and cooling system’s efficiency but the dust and dirt in there also get circulated around your home, exacerbating allergies and other respiratory conditions.

Unclog Your Dryer Vent

Did you know that propane clothes dryers get laundry dry 25% faster than comparable electric dryers? But to enjoy that efficiency, you need to make sure it has clean vents. Vent blockage can dramatically reduce the flow of air to the dryer, reducing its efficiency and creating a fire hazard. Clean your clothes dryer’s vent using a brush made for this job. You can find one at your local home improvement store or online.
Many local ductwork cleaners also offer professional cleaning of dryer vent lines as well.

Clean Your Propane Range

Between holiday dinners, weekend roasts, Sunday pancakes, and sheet pan suppers, your propane range has likely gotten a lot of use over the winter.
Now is a great time to give it a good cleaning so it will work properly and efficiently. Follow these directions for a squeaky-clean oven and cooktop.

Seal Drafts and Leaks

Drafts around windows, exterior doors, and exterior walls aren’t just a problem in the winter. In warmer weather, cool air escapes and warm air gets into your home, forcing your air conditioning to work harder to keep your home cool and driving up your energy costs.
Use caulk, weatherstripping, and expanding foam to seal up those drafts. Also, when cleaning, do a good scrubbing of the tracks on your sliding doors. Dirt and grime in the tracks can cause your doors to not shut completely, which also leads to drafts.
