The way that families in North Carolina think about this home comfort has certainly shifted in recent decades, as we’ve all become aware of our own roles in addressing the threat of climate change. LG Jordan Oil & Gas has been serving families in Apex, Fuquay-Varina and other nearby cities and towns since 1924. We’ve seen energy usage change and home comfort equipment become more efficient over the last century.
Today, we are happy to provide propane and the equipment it powers to our customers. Propane is a clean, green energy source that’s been recognized as a clean alternative fuel in both the Clean Air Act and the National Energy Policy Act. Let’s break down what makes propane such an eco-friendly option for your home.
It’s imperative that we lower the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that our homes emit. Propane does just that. Its carbon intensity score (the amount of CO2 released to generate a given amount of energy) is way lower than diesel, gasoline or even North Carolina’s grid electricity (which still relies heavily on coal and other fossil fuels for generation).
Beyond its low-carbon benefits, propane is also methane-free. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than CO2 when trapping heat in the atmosphere over a 20-year period.
Additionally, propane emits virtually no particulate matter, a carcinogen, and it’s non-toxic. Even in the rare event of a leak, it won’t negatively impact air, soil, water, aquatic life, marine life or plant life.
Investing in energy efficiency is a surefire way to lower your home’s carbon footprint. Propane furnaces, for example, can have fuel efficiency ratings as high as 98.5%. That means that essentially all the propane you use goes to its intended function, and almost no energy goes out of your chimney.
Propane tankless water heaters are some of the most efficient hot water systems around, using minimal fuel to generate endless hot water when you need it. Even the propane-powered gas logs and fireplace inserts we sell are considerably more efficient than wood fires.
Renewable propane is chemically identical to conventional propane, but it’s made using organic and recycled feedstocks like restaurant grease, forest waste, municipal waste and agricultural residue. The resulting fuel has the same efficiency and low-emissions benefits as conventional propane, but its carbon intensity is about 75% lower!
Renewable propane isn’t widely used in homes yet, but we’re seeing its production and distribution grow considerably. Indeed, Raleigh’s Parks Department recently introduced new 26,000 lb. medium-duty trucks that run on renewable propane!
