With the seasons changing in the Tar Heel State, it’s an excellent time to take care of some annual maintenance for your natural gas products. Here are five simple steps that can ensure their safe, efficient operation.

1. Clean Your Gas Stove and Grill

Natural gas tends to burn efficiently in well-maintained burners, but grease build-up on stoves and grills can create a fire hazard in your home. If you haven’t done so, please soak and scrub the grates and other removable hardware on your cooking appliances.

Also of note — when gas burns efficiently, the flame should be blue. If you’re seeing yellow or orange flames, your natural gas isn’t burning completely. Contact us to look at the issue for you.

2. Flush Your Water Heater

Gas water heaters are generally reliable and efficient at keeping your showers steamy, your water taps warm and your hot-water appliances running effectively. However, sediment can accumulate in the tank and negatively impact their performance.

It’s important to flush your water heater tank once a year. Grab your owner’s manual for the details, but here’s the gist: First, turn off the burner and close the cold-water intake valve. Then, hook up a hose to the drain valve and let the tank drain. Once that’s done, flush the tank with more cold water, close the drain valve and refill it.

3. Check Your Furnace Filter

If you have a forced air heating and cooling setup in your home (i.e., a furnace and/or central air conditioner), it’s crucial to check your system’s air filter once a month. Dirty filters can lower your indoor air quality and reduce HVAC efficiency. If the filter is dirty or clogged, either clean or replace it, as instructed by your furnace instructions.

4. Clean out the Lint Trap on Your Gas Dryer

It’s always a good idea to clean off your dryer’s lint filter after each cycle. But once a year, you should give your dryer’s lint trap a thorough vacuum and wide-down. This can help your dryer’s performance in a variety of ways:

  1. Lint is flammable and can ignite from the dryer’s heating element or a spark.
  2. Lint can clog the vent, reducing the dryer’s efficiency and lifespan by requiring longer run times.
  3. A poorly closing vent allows heat or cooling to escape.
  4. An open vent invites insects and pests.
  5. An unbalanced dryer leads to faster wear of rotating parts.

It’s always a good idea to bring in a professional team to safety-check your gas-fired equipment to make sure your fuel is burning fully and combustion products are venting correctly.
