5 Reasons Your Gas Grill Won’t Light

We can help you get your propane or natural gas grill working again.

gas grills Wake County, NC Nothing puts a damper on a summer cookout faster than a grill that refuses to light. Before you postpone the barbecue or settle for pizza instead, take a few minutes to troubleshoot the problem. Many common grill issues have simple solutions that can get you back to cooking in no time. Here are five things that North Carolina grillers should check before calling for help.

1. Are You Out of Fuel?

The most common culprit is also the easiest to overlook. Portable propane cylinders don’t include built-in fuel gauges, so it’s easy to run out unexpectedly.

If your cylinder is empty, skip the costly exchange program. LG Jordan Oil & Gas can refill your propane cylinder for significantly less than the cost of exchanging it. We also inspect and requalify eligible cylinders, helping you get more life from your tank while saving money.

If your grill is connected to your home’s natural gas or bulk propane supply, verify that the gas valve is fully open before moving on.

2. Check the Ignition System

If you don’t hear a clicking sound when you press the igniter, the ignition system may need attention.

For battery-powered igniters, replacing the battery often solves the problem. If your grill uses a self-powered piezo igniter, inspect the wiring and ceramic electrode for cracks, loose connections, or visible damage. You can also test whether the burners light with a long match or a grill lighter. If they do, the igniter is likely the issue.

3. Reset a Stuck Propane Regulator

A propane regulator safety feature can occasionally restrict gas flow if the cylinder valve is opened too quickly. The result is a weak flame, or no usable flame at all.

Try resetting the regulator:

  1. Turn off the grill burners and close the propane cylinder valve.
  2. Disconnect the regulator.
  3. Wait several minutes.
  4. Reconnect it securely.
  5. Slowly reopen the cylinder valve before lighting the grill.

Opening the valve gradually usually prevents the problem from happening again.

4. Inspect the Burners for Blockages

Burner ports can become clogged with grease, food debris, or even insects that build nests during periods of storage.

With the gas supply turned off, remove the cooking grates and inspect the burners. Carefully clean blocked ports using a soft brush or wooden toothpick. Avoid enlarging the burner holes with metal tools, as this can affect flame performance.

Regular cleaning helps your grill heat more evenly while extending its lifespan.

5. Is It Time for a New Grill?

If you’re constantly replacing ignition parts, battling rust, or dealing with uneven heating, your grill may simply be reaching the end of its useful life.
