Reducing Air Pollution with Propane

Propane is a clean-burning fuel — and it’s only getting cleaner.

propane Wake County, NCFor quite a while now, homeowners in North Carolina and throughout the U.S. have been reckoning with the impact that their energy choices have on our planet. What’s the best way to maintain a standard of comfort all year round while limiting the emissions we release into our atmosphere?

At LG Jordan Oil & Gas, we’re happy to report that the propane we deliver is an exceptionally clean and eco-friendly option. In this article, we’ll explain why.

Where Does Propane Come From?

Most propane in the U.S. today is created as a byproduct when natural gas is extracted. A smaller share comes from refining crude oil. This type of fuel is called conventional propane. Because it’s drawn from existing natural gas and oil wells, no additional drilling is required. Soon, we’ll look at how renewable propane is changing the future of this fuel.

Propane’s Environmental Footprint

Propane is recognized as an alternative fuel under both the 1990 Clean Air Act and the Energy Policy Act of 1992. One reason is its low carbon intensity, which means it produces fewer carbon emissions compared to fuels like diesel. It also delivers energy more efficiently than grid electricity in our state. Propane contains no methane, emits very little particulate matter, and is non-toxic — so it won’t harm soil, water, or plant life if a leak occurs. All in all, propane is already a smart, eco-conscious energy option, and it’s only getting better.

The Amazing Efficiency of Propane Products

Modern propane appliances are designed with efficiency in mind, further reducing how much energy is wasted. Propane heating systems can reach efficiency ratings of up to 98.5%. Propane water heaters also stand out, producing hot water twice as fast as comparable electric models. Tankless versions go even further, offering virtually endless hot water and cutting energy costs by up to 34%.

Beyond heating and hot water, propane brings everyday convenience. Propane stoves and ovens provide instant, precise heat for efficient cooking, while propane clothes dryers work faster than electric models. With shorter drying cycles, fewer wrinkles, and less static cling, they make laundry easier and more efficient. Across the board, propane appliances combine performance, reliability, and savings in every season.

The Rise of Renewable Propane

Renewable propane offers all the same benefits as conventional propane but is made from recycled and organic materials such as used cooking oil, animal fats, and plant byproducts. Best of all, it works in the same appliances and equipment you already own — no modifications needed. With a carbon intensity about 75% lower than conventional propane, it’s an exciting part of the push toward cleaner energy.

While still growing in availability, renewable propane is expected to become a major contributor to lowering emissions in the years ahead. Today, renewable propane autogas is powering over 100 of Raleigh’s city fleet vehicles!
